Recovery Brekky Smoothie
The best diet is a balanced one, and by balanced, I mean your consuming an adequate amount of protein, carbohydrates, and fats, relative to the requirements of your body. It doesn’t matter if you exercise a lot or a little bit, our body NEEDS the above three macronutrients, and from good sources to provide us with the all important micronutrients (vitamins & minerals).
Did you know that your brain is one of the hungriest organs in your body, consuming roughly 20% of your energy each day? AND it’s preferred energy source is carbohydrates?
CARBS ARE NOT BAD. FAT IS NOT THE ENEMY.
Additionally, carbohydrates are stored in our liver and muscles in the form of glycogen, to be used as energy source. The purpose of this mini rant is that I am PASSIONATE about breaking the toxic stigma and reputation around certain nutrients being bad. Truth is, our body needs it all.
I personally tend to crave this brekky smoothie after a long run, as it’s quick to make and ticks all the boxes mentioned above. I include lots of fats, carbohydrates, and protein in an ice-cold smoothie to cool me down and kickstart my recovery. After all, my body is SCREAMING to replenish it’s stores.
Note that you don’t have to do a big bout of exercise to enjoy a smoothie. The beauty of smoothies is there is no limit to how you can make them. So feel free to adjust ingredients or amounts below.
Ingredients:
- 2 bananas (preferably frozen)
- 1 cup oats (approx 100g)
- 1/2 cup frozen mixed berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries)
- 1-2tbsp seed mix (hemp, chia, flax)
- 40g plant protein (I use Amazonia Raw – read why it’s my favourite below)
- Liquid (water/plant milk) for desired consistency
- Ice

Method (couldn't be more simple):
- Throw all ingredients in a blender (I use the G.O.A.T. Vitamix)
- Blend until smooth (approx 30secs)
- Pour, slurp, and enjoy the taste & recovery

Vegan Protein Recommendation:
Amazonia Raw make an array of vegan-friendly products that I love to incorporate into my diet. Here are a few reasons I love their protein powder:
- Organic, sustainably sourced, and uses quality wholefood ingredients
- Micronutrients GALORE – some flavours contain over 12mg of iron PER SERVE!
- Great ‘mixability’ – I literally shake it up with water after a gym session and it’s smooth!
